Sumeragi, Authentic Japanese Cuisine in Setrasari

We found this place by coincidence when we are looking to grab something to eat for dinner in Setra Sari area. The place itself is designed very Japanese, with all of the ornaments and simplicity that you often found in a Japanese restaurant.

The place itself has their own bar, with several table in the first floor, but for us, we really enjoy having our meal in the second floor. The situation is somewhat more intimate and warm.

The menu that we really enjoyed here is their signature salad.

What? Salad in Japanese restaurant you asked?

Yup. Their salad is one of the main reason why we enjoy this restaurant. The vegetables are fresh, their portion is huugee... And most importantly, their dressing tasted delicious. we really recommended that if you come to this restaurant to give it a try. We also loves their Okonomiyaki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okonomiyaki).
All of the meals here are prepared fresh and usually comes in large portion. Really suitable for you guys who loves to eat large or eating out in large number.

Enjoy!

One of the plenty hidden gems in Bandung. This Baso Tahu vendor is well hidden in the southern area of Bandung city. DeHaPe Foodcourt, Dalem Kaum, Bandung

The Invitation

On April 2015, we were invited to the press conference for the opening of DeHaPe Foodcourt in Dalem Kaum area, Bandung. We were excited to attend this press conference, because as far as we know, there are only handful of restaurant/ foodcourt that are available in the area.

The Press Conference

During the press conference, there are various representatives from several blogs, and also from news and radios. The event went well and lively. Several main interest points that the vendor are promoting include beautiful view and scenery from the foodcourt, variation of unique menus in the area, and cooperation with several communities in Bandung area. In overall, their concept was splendid and unique, as most of the other foodcourt do not try to extend to reach communities in Bandung.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

As for their food, it was tasted good. We particularly loved their Hainanese Chicken Rice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hainanese_chicken_rice) menu. And also the experience having lunch or dinner there was quite unique.

So, the last time you are visiting the Alun-Alun area, and you are hungry but have not yet decided to eat, then this foodcourt definitely should be on top of your list.

Enjoy!

For more information about Keuken, you can go and visit their website here.

Umabo

Umabo is a restaurant originated in Jakarta that is opening their stall in Keuken as special tenant. Their menu is appeared to be a mix of American/ Mexican comfort food. Today we tried their chili fries, corn cornitas and hotdog. They also sells their own special beverage: cranberry crush.

Gado-Gado Batununggal

The first time we found this restaurant is by coincident. Aswin wanted to have a gado-gado, and currently I have to visit Batununggal to post a package. After circling around in the area, I finally found one shophouse that sells gado-gado.

The vendor sells gado-gado, rujak cuka, noodle, and variation of Chinese foods. The gado-gado that they are selling is quite delicious, with lighter peanut sauce compared with the other vendors that we used to have. With the price of Rp 18.000 (around US$ 1,5) with lontong, it is quite a bargain and enough to fuel you through the day.

Enjoy!

Our (Culinary) Trip with Yogalates Community to Floating Market, Lembang

Situ Umar in Lembang has been transformed into tourism destination called Lembang Floating Market. It has been quite popular nowadays, therefore in the weekend this place always packed with tourists. The location itself used to be a fishing area for the locals and some said that it was quite dirty and not so delightful. Situ Umar was not popular either.

It was a long weekend with two holidays in between, so on Thursday our yoga class decided to have a trip to Lembang Floating Market. Since it was a holiday, we took a detour through Cihanjuang area and stopped for a moment at Tahu Susu Cihanjuang. We were quite right because the traffic was awesome and we arrived at already hectic Floating Market.

Floating Market located behind the Grand Hotel Lembang and once you entered the place, you saw a little lake surrounding with beautiful landscapes and there were saung and seating areas around the lake. We had to pay Rp. 10.000,- (+ US$1) for a ticket, but it also included with the welcoming drink. Our friend, Mala, already arrived early, so she booked a saung for us. After that we sat, enjoyed the view, and saw people passed by. We decided to have ala carte snacks, it consisted of spiraled crispy fried potatoes, grilled sausages, batagor, satay, combro, and tutut. We had to exchange our money with coins that valued Rp. 5000,- and Rp. 10.000,- each. The interesting things the vendor stalls were a boat, so it was mimicking the floating market in Thailand or Kalimantan.

The area itself were tourism spot for family, it had a full package for every member of the family. On one side there's rabbit park for children and you can sail a boat in the lake. I just like sitting down in our saung, have the snacks, and saw people passing by in front of us. Well, it was scorching there, the sun shined so brightly.
Enjoy!

Batagor Vendor in front of ITB, Bandung

Batagor is one comfort food that we really liked. It has the crunchy texture you will find in similar comfort food such as Nacho, French Fries and Pop Corn, with the chewiness fillings of a Marshmallow.

So, every time we are feeling down (usually after meeting my supervisor in my campus), we usually goes to and eat Batagor. With the average price of around Rp 10.000 (US$ 1) per portion, it is a snack that you cannot miss.

The Glorious Cimplung: Sambel Hejo Restaurant

Sambel Hejo Restaurant is one of the traditional Sundanese restaurant in Bandung. The first branch opened in Purwakarta, and quickly opening several branches all around West Java.

Their specialty menu include: fried chicken, various types of pepes, sayur asem, and their signature item in their menu: Cimplung (deep fried potato ball).

In fact, cimplung is the only reason for me to visit this place, and it takes us around 10 minutes of waiting just to try them.

Worth every second of waiting.

Jakarta (Culinary) Trip in March 2014: Bubur Ayam Pak Gendut

One of the famous chicken con gee outlet in Serpong. We liked this place for their tasty Bubur Ayam and for the sentimental value that they provide. After all, we have lived in Serpong for more than six years, before we returned to Bandung. So this trip is Special.

Their Bubur Ayam is as expected still tasted great.... Like we always eat back then when we are living here...

This vendor is very unique for us, as it is selling out very fast. If you go here after 09.00 AM you might be disappointed, as they do not have anything for you.

Their specialties is Nasi Kuning and Bubur Ayam.

We do not complain, as the taste is worth it. For the price of Rp. 7.000 (around USD 0.6), you will have a hearty meal for breakfast.

Looking at the View in Kantin Tong Tong Baltos

Visiting this restaurant while taking Alia to visit the newly hijab outlets there. While waiting for her, I decided to visit this place called Kantin Tong Tong.

Located conveniently in the 1st floor of Balubur Town Square with nice view to the street this place sells traditional Indonesian and Asian foods. As this is brunch time, and we just ate our breakfast a couple of hours ago, I decided to order their coffee and grilled sandwich.

The taste is okay, and the view helps to spend the time waiting for Alia to finish shopping.

Lumpia Basah in Salman Mosque ITB

During our blog writing in Jejakrasa, we have covered  lumpia basah before, as you can see in our previous post here. We loved lumpia basah as it kinda bring us back to our childhood and old time memories of high school and college years.

This particular lumpia basah stand is also like a blast from the past, as it has been around since we entered our college years (don't ask us what year, it really making us feel old. Hint: a bit over a decade ago). We visit them per one of our high school friend request.

A request to visit one of our favorite childhood food stand? Who is gonna say no to that? :)

The stand itself is still have not change for quite some time. A little bit of paint job here and there, but we can see the stand like we used to visit them during college years. With the price of Rp 7.000,- (around USD 0.6) it is still one of the best bargain menu for brunch/ lunch/ snack.

Fulfilling, healthy, cheap, and reminiscing good old time memories. Really loved it.

Jakarta (Culinary) Trip in June 2013: Joni Steak Pasar Baru Jakarta

Before we know this place, only HolyCow and HappCow are the only name that comes in our mind when talking about cheap and "real" steak. But now there is one name pops out, and it pops out in a place we never thought about. Introducing: Joni Steak!

You might think: Joni... You mean like in the first name Joni? Does it sound a little bit cheesy you think?

Yes, at first the name does not look supportive enough. But, if you think of it, some of the great chefs in the world are using their name for their brand. From the famous one and only Daniel Boulud to the famous meeting place in Jakarta Mario's Place, where some says power negotiation about the future of our country are often discussed here. So, we think it is ok for Mr. Joni to put his name here. After all, this is his outlet, right? :)

Ok, enough about the name. Let's talk about their food. We think they sell one of the best bargain steak in Jakarta right now. I mean back around 2012, they sell steak for as cheap as Rp 35k (US$ 3.5). The current price has already hike for around Rp 42k - 66k (US$ 4.2 - 6.6), but for this you already got Wagyu with the amenities. Quite a bargain eh?

Surprisingly with that price, they still maintain a great quality for a steakhouse. We never found a quite well steakhouse with old style service using managers who circle around and take orders until we went here. Sure, the place is humbling, but they don't mess with the service quality.

Another great point which we often discuss here is: They can serve a medium rare steak. This is a very rare traits that only a good steakhouse in Indonesia can provide. You cannot imagine countless time we went to steakhouse, ordering a medium rare steak, and then finds that they served in medium well, or worst: well done. -__-".

So, the next time you are around Pasar Baru area, and confused on where to eat or where to take your spouse to eat or when searching for a place for celebration, but with tight budgets, then we think this is the perfect place for you to go. Great steak, good service, and most importantly reasonable price.

Enjoy!

Nasi Kuning & Bubur Ayam Pasir Salam

One of our favorite place to eat breakfast on the go. The outlet is always empty, but don't let the appearance fooled you, as the outcome can be two ways: Either nobody eat there, or the food is already being sold out.

Apparently, the latter is what you get when you visit this place over 08:00 AM. Like today, we managed to get just one portion of Nasi Kuning and two portions of Bubur Ayam. I have the next customer as my grumbling witness you haplessly can only watch me smile while I bring the last piece of Bubur Ayam & Nasi Kuning to my car.

Perhaps there is Karma at play, and maybe the next time I am visiting this vendor, it is he who will smile in front of me, while he brings the last order Nasi Kuning & Bubur Ayam to his car :).

Man vs Food Edition: Nasi Goreng Suyud

*spoiler warning*

...

...

Man and Woman lose. BIG TIME!

...

...

I mean, looked at the size of that portion -_____-".

 photo mtf_VFfTO_225_zps717b89bd.jpg
1/2 versus full portion. Use the spoon as scaling device. Big isn't it?

The nasi goreng is still tasty, delicious with a hint of charcoal in them. But the portion... We think it can feed an entire battalion so to speak :).

The chef was kind enough to reduce our embarrassment, by offering the nasi goreng to be wrapped.

And it took us two days to finish the whole portion...

Man and Woman: 0; Food 2

So, in the end, a wise words from us: if you have large stomach capacity, and like to challenge yourself, them this nasi goreng Suyud portion is a must for you to conquer. At least it will give you the bragging rights after you finished it whole.

For us, perhaps after a decent training to increase our input capacity under the tutelage of Adam Richman, then we will visit them again.

For humanity!

Kuala Lumpur (Culinary) Trip in April 2013: Burger Bakar Abang Burn

Today we have the honor of being taken out by one of our best friend in Malaysia, Shazrin. He is currently working as a lecturer in UiTM, Malaysia.

He is visiting us all the way from Shah Alam, and tonight he brings us to this hip place called Burger Bakar Abang Burn.

It is a local franchise of grilled burger, that is quite famous here, with 15 chains are opened all around Malaysia. What so special about their course in our opinion is the gigantic serving that they served.

I ordered their burger, and they served their side dish of sausages, instead of regular fries. Other unique thing that we find here, is the addition of onion rings inside the burger and the hard-to-miss towering soda.

Really great place for hanging out with your friends.

Thanks Shazrin! Hopefully we can see you again soon!

Enjoy!

Warung Sangrai: Real Indonesian, Eat With Their Bare Hands!!

Warung Sangrai photo CoverSangrai_zpse2995b22.jpg

Today we are visiting the neighbor restaurant of Mamak Kitchen, called Warung Sangrai, based on the invitation of the restaurant owner. Located in the opposite side of Mamak Kitchen, the restaurant is serving traditional Indonesian Food with one particular course that are standing out: Quails.

The design has more warm and friendliness ambiance. Typical ambiance that you can find when you are visiting your local warung in Indonesia.

Suasana Sangrai photo Sangrai_Facade_zps9945f0cd.jpg
The interior has ambiance that look like warung

When looking at the menu, we are quickly smiling after looking at the restaurant tagline: "Orang Indonesia Asli Makan Pakai Tangan (Real Indonesian, Eat With Their Bare Hands!!)".
Spot On!
In the menu, you can find the thumb side picture for best seller label, and chili side picture for spicy label.

Menu Sangrai photo Menu_zps64f7cb7a.jpg
The restaurant tagline

After the food are coming, we are quickly understand on what the slogan means. Although they prepare the spoon and fork, the foods that being served here is mostly easier to eat using your bare hand.

Accompanied by the Head Chef, pak Ricky, we quickly eat our way, while listening to the explanation by the Chef.
For starters, we are being served with their specialty starter menu: Tahu Gerus Pedas. It is basically fried tofu served with chili. You can order the spiciness level from mid-spicy (one chili picture), spicy (two chili pictures), very spicy (three chili pictures), and off-the-menu order: pedas pisan or roughly translated: super spicy!!!. For us, mid-spicy is already to spicy for us :).

Tahu Gerus Sangrai photo TahuGerusPedasSangrai_zpsb9f32d5e.jpg
Tahu Gerus Pedas

For main courses, they are serving their specialties: Quails. Other than chicken, bird-based course is relatively uncommon to find in restaurants in Bandung, as they need extra special treatment to cook them. If it is under-cooked the meat tasted horrible, but if you over-cooked it, the meat will go tough.

So it is enjoyable for us, and a little bit surprising to find the bird being cooked into perfection. Two courses are being served: the original and the spicy version of fried Quails, and both tasted great.
If you want to bring a friend, they serves a Quail package menu of four to eight person. Shiny!

Burung Original dan Rawit Sangrai photo BurungOriginalampRawitSangrai_zps455f5151.jpg
Their specialties: Quails!

Other than Quails, they also serving their Gurame Bakar, Nasi Tungku, and Tutug Oncom. The Gurame Bakar are cooked not using ketchup, but special caramel sauce, adding to the unique sweetness of the fish (and for me a revelation after series of spicy foods :D). The Nasi Tungku is a twist of traditional Nasi Uduk, with the regular dried salted fish is replaced with fried salted fish (Jambal). The Tutug Oncom is served with Fried Chicken, a festive for one person to eat, as combined it creates a very fulfilling main course.

For beverages, they have Es Campur, Es Cingcau Hijau, and their Iced Tea as their best seller beverages. The Es Campur and Cingcau Hijau is different from other restaurant, as they prefer to use coconut milk to replace the regular condensed milk. This makes their Ice beverages more lighter compared with their compatriots. For the Iced Tea, it is the large sized glass that makes us go: "Wow". Really appropriate for hungry students visiting from all around the restaurant.

Besides of the regular menu, they also serves breakfast menu, consisted of Bubur Ayam Cianjur Komplit and Nasi Kuning Komplit. The Bubur Ayam Cianjur Komplit is a savory version of regular chicken porridge with chicken broth on top, while the Nasi Kuning Komplit is a fresh favorite rice dish made per order.

Affordable Price. Great Food. Nice Ambiance. An unforgettable experience for us to visit, and we are looking forward for our next attendance here soon.
