Baso Tahu Lina, Sawah Kurung, Bandung, Indonesia

One of the plenty hidden gems in Bandung. This Baso Tahu vendor is well hidden in the southern area of Bandung city. With the taste as great as their counterpart vendors in Bandung, as well as their competitive price, we believe that Baso Tahu Lina will become one of the favorite culinary destination in Bandung.

DeHaPe Foodcourt, Dalem Kaum, Bandung

The Invitation

On April 2015, we were invited to the press conference for the opening of DeHaPe Foodcourt in Dalem Kaum area, Bandung. We were excited to attend this press conference, because as far as we know, there are only handful of restaurant/ foodcourt that are available in the area.

The Press Conference

During the press conference, there are various representatives from several blogs, and also from news and radios. The event went well and lively. Several main interest points that the vendor are promoting include beautiful view and scenery from the foodcourt, variation of unique menus in the area, and cooperation with several communities in Bandung area. In overall, their concept was splendid and unique, as most of the other foodcourt do not try to extend to reach communities in Bandung.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

As for their food, it was tasted good. We particularly loved their Hainanese Chicken Rice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hainanese_chicken_rice) menu. And also the experience having lunch or dinner there was quite unique.

So, the last time you are visiting the Alun-Alun area, and you are hungry but have not yet decided to eat, then this foodcourt definitely should be on top of your list.

Enjoy!

Woontoon Pork Noodle (Contributed Article by Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

I bought woontoon noddle pork near Ayutthaya train station before I
left Ayutthaya for Nongkhai. The price was 35 Thai Bath or about 1 US
dollar. The noddle was served with woontoon, sliced roasted pork,
vegetable and radish. I thought that 1 US dollar was not too expensive
for one bowl of woontoon noddle becuse I got a lot of woontoon and
roasted pork. Before I eat it, I poured nampla (fish sauce) and
grounded peanuts. Enjoy my dinner before night train ride.

Katjapiring: The Melting Pot of Flavors and Cultures

A common tradition in our family is having a dinner session together in a restaurant every Saturday/ Sunday night. This is the the opportunity for all family members to chat and have an intimate discussion, with added bonus for us is to try new venues around Bandung.

Today we tried the Katjapiring restaurant. It is not actually a new restaurant, as we have try them in PvJ somewhile ago. But since they reopened a new restaurant in Jalan Ciliwung, we have not have the chance to try them yet. Until now...

The restaurant is conveniently located in Jalan Ciliwung, just near the intersection with Jalan Bengawan. The design is colonial and good looking. Really interesting concept they have here.

We ordered several menu from the restaurant. Dad ordered the Mie Godog Jawan Suwiran, while the rest of us ordered foods that we shared together. Among the item, the most interesting food that we tried is their fried fish nyonya style. Very delicious and highly recommended if you ever attended the restaurant again. Yum!

Gado-Gado Batununggal

The first time we found this restaurant is by coincident. Aswin wanted to have a gado-gado, and currently I have to visit Batununggal to post a package. After circling around in the area, I finally found one shophouse that sells gado-gado.

The vendor sells gado-gado, rujak cuka, noodle, and variation of Chinese foods. The gado-gado that they are selling is quite delicious, with lighter peanut sauce compared with the other vendors that we used to have. With the price of Rp 18.000 (around US$ 1,5) with lontong, it is quite a bargain and enough to fuel you through the day.

Enjoy!

Our (Culinary) Trip with Yogalates Community to Floating Market, Lembang

Situ Umar in Lembang has been transformed into tourism destination called Lembang Floating Market. It has been quite popular nowadays, therefore in the weekend this place always packed with tourists. The location itself used to be a fishing area for the locals and some said that it was quite dirty and not so delightful. Situ Umar was not popular either.

It was a long weekend with two holidays in between, so on Thursday our yoga class decided to have a trip to Lembang Floating Market. Since it was a holiday, we took a detour through Cihanjuang area and stopped for a moment at Tahu Susu Cihanjuang. We were quite right because the traffic was awesome and we arrived at already hectic Floating Market.

Floating Market located behind the Grand Hotel Lembang and once you entered the place, you saw a little lake surrounding with beautiful landscapes and there were saung and seating areas around the lake. We had to pay Rp. 10.000,- (+ US$1) for a ticket, but it also included with the welcoming drink. Our friend, Mala, already arrived early, so she booked a saung for us. After that we sat, enjoyed the view, and saw people passed by. We decided to have ala carte snacks, it consisted of spiraled crispy fried potatoes, grilled sausages, batagor, satay, combro, and tutut. We had to exchange our money with coins that valued Rp. 5000,- and Rp. 10.000,- each. The interesting things the vendor stalls were a boat, so it was mimicking the floating market in Thailand or Kalimantan.

The area itself were tourism spot for family, it had a full package for every member of the family. On one side there's rabbit park for children and you can sail a boat in the lake. I just like sitting down in our saung, have the snacks, and saw people passing by in front of us. Well, it was scorching there, the sun shined so brightly.
Enjoy!

Batagor Vendor in front of ITB, Bandung

Batagor is one comfort food that we really liked. It has the crunchy texture you will find in similar comfort food such as Nacho, French Fries and Pop Corn, with the chewiness fillings of a Marshmallow.

So, every time we are feeling down (usually after meeting my supervisor in my campus), we usually goes to and eat Batagor. With the average price of around Rp 10.000 (US$ 1) per portion, it is a snack that you cannot miss.

Enjoy!

The Glorious Cimplung: Sambel Hejo Restaurant

Sambel Hejo Restaurant is one of the traditional Sundanese restaurant in Bandung. The first branch opened in Purwakarta, and quickly opening several branches all around West Java.

Their specialty menu include: fried chicken, various types of pepes, sayur asem, and their signature item in their menu: Cimplung (deep fried potato ball).

In fact, cimplung is the only reason for me to visit this place, and it takes us around 10 minutes of waiting just to try them.

Worth every second of waiting.

Jakarta (Culinary) Trip in March 2014: Bubur Ayam Pak Gendut

One of the famous chicken con gee outlet in Serpong. We liked this place for their tasty Bubur Ayam and for the sentimental value that they provide. After all, we have lived in Serpong for more than six years, before we returned to Bandung. So this trip is Special.

Their Bubur Ayam is as expected still tasted great.... Like we always eat back then when we are living here...

Mon Cherie Dessert... It's What Happiness Tastes Like

Three of our closest cousins decided to start their own dessert line, and we are really excited and happy with their work.
Their pudding are based on our Grandma's secret recipe, so as as someone that already tasted them, we can say that it is tasty. They, however, managed to twist things around with additional four flavors of green tea, taro, bubble gum, and guava, making them more modern and fit for younger audience.

Besides the pudding, they also have their own line of Apple Pie Pop Tart. With the price range of around 9-12K rupiah, we suggested that you should try them. They also accept delivery, although right now it is just around Bandung area. Hopefully soon they would be able to expand their delivery area to wider area.

So, what are you waiting for?

Bakso Miskam, Bandung

Since we returned to Bandung in early 2010, the price of Mie Bakso strangely has skyrocketed over the years. If it was a stock, and we invested there, we might be rich by now :).

So we were excited to find that there is one new branch of Mie Bakso that offers delicious noodle and meat balls, but with affordable price and good quality. The other main plus side is: It is located conveniently near where we lived! :)

The Mie Bakso tasted more lighter. It also goes the same with the broth. It is more lighter compared with other famous Mie Bakso stand all around Bandung. The overall experience was great, and with easier-on-the-pocket price, it is a bargain for us!

Our Pilgrimage Journey to Medina and Mecca on January 2014: Broast Al Furoo

This is our second attempt to purchase the broast chicken. By looking at the logo we were convinced that we have found the one. However, after quick inspection, we were disappointed to find that the brand is not what we wanted for.

But a serving of food is a serving of food, right? Better enjoy them then.

Similar with our previous experience with broast chicken, this one also packed for serving a family. Four broast chicken and stacks of french fries. What makes it different is their additional garlic sauce and two buns of diner bread, instead of flat breads.

Their taste is quite alright, and the garlic sauce in particular is quite tangy. I think it really compliments the chicken taste.

Perhaps someday we can find the one. In our next Hajj pilgrimage, perhaps?

Our Pilgrimage Journey to Medina and Mecca on January 2014: Peanuts and Raisin in Jaronah Mosque

While waiting for the other pilgrims who are taking their second miqat, we strolled around the Jaronah Mosque, looking for something to snacked, and one particular vendor quickly emerged.

The outlets is very simple, just stacks of plastic bags behind a pick-up car. But the colors of the peanuts and raisins is very inviting. We could not resist to purchase a bag... maybe two... alright! Three! bags of peanuts and raisins there.

And we only stayed for 30 minutes there. Can you imagine how many bags that we purchased if we stayed there for more than an hour? :)

Enjoy!

Our Pilgrimage Journey to Medina and Mecca on January 2014: Al Kawakb Broast

One of the main interesting food in Saudi Arabia, is their famous broast chicken. It is basically flour battered fried chicken with sides of french fries and bread. So, our first take of the broast chicken is in the Al Kawakb Broast.

Located in front of our hotel, the vendor is located with several other seller, including Nasi Kebuli and Fruit Juice seller. We quickly ordered them out.

The serving includes 4 (four!) piece of chicken, a heapful of french fries and two large flat breads. I think it could feed at least four of us here.

And it turned out right. We finished the whole meal for two days. Hmmmm...

Enjoy!

Our Pilgrimage Journey to Medina and Mecca on January 2014: Murtabak, French Fries, and Juices

It turned out, staying in different country, with different temperature, can really affect your body condition. Combined with tight schedules and a lot of activities, can make you ill.

This what happened to Alia and my dad. Both of them, after finishing the Umrah, suddenly goes ill with high fever and rapid cough. From both of them, Dad's illness is worse than Alia's.

One of his request during illness is to have a Murtabak. So, I quickly went to the vendor in front of the hotel to purchase it. The seller is quite nice, but very straight forward. He speaks no English, so the communication is mostly done via hand gesture.

I ordered one Murtabak, one French Fries and Fruit Juice, and being a good foodie, I am "obliged" to taste them before serving :P. The taste in overall is similar with the martabak found in Indonesia, but with smaller portion and less crispy compared with the Indonesian counterpart.

I hope this can help fasten the healing process.

Enjoy!

Nasi Kuning Ibu Nani, Cikawao

This vendor is very unique for us, as it is selling out very fast. If you go here after 09.00 AM you might be disappointed, as they do not have anything for you.

Their specialties is Nasi Kuning and Bubur Ayam.

We do not complain, as the taste is worth it. For the price of Rp. 7.000 (around USD 0.6), you will have a hearty meal for breakfast.
