George Town Curry Chicken and Dalcha (Contributed Article from Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

On 21 August 2014, I visited Penang Island aka George Town. The City
impression was very good. The city is clean, many historical buildings
and town squares were well preserved. I enjoyed my one day trip there
and delicious Indian dish in Little Indian square.

During lunch time, I chose to come to Kassim Mustafa restaurant, which
was near Indian market. I ordered chicken curry, butter rice and
dalcha. The taste of Indian taste were very strong (was it Indian
masala?). In my opinion, the spices were stronger than Indian food
which I ate in Bandung's Indian Restaurant. After I asked Kassim
Mustafa waiter, I knew that the dalcha soup main ingredients were
vegetables. Dalcha soup was suitable for vegan diet. The soup was
thick and savory.

According to trip expenses note, I spent 7 MYR for curry chicken,
butter rice, dalcha plus kopi tarik. Kopi tarik was coffee plus milk,
and were poured several times which made bubble.

I do hope to go there once again and try out chinese food in George Town.

Enjoy!

Katjapiring: The Melting Pot of Flavors and Cultures

A common tradition in our family is having a dinner session together in a restaurant every Saturday/ Sunday night. This is the the opportunity for all family members to chat and have an intimate discussion, with added bonus for us is to try new venues around Bandung.

Today we tried the Katjapiring restaurant. It is not actually a new restaurant, as we have try them in PvJ somewhile ago. But since they reopened a new restaurant in Jalan Ciliwung, we have not have the chance to try them yet. Until now...

The restaurant is conveniently located in Jalan Ciliwung, just near the intersection with Jalan Bengawan. The design is colonial and good looking. Really interesting concept they have here.

We ordered several menu from the restaurant. Dad ordered the Mie Godog Jawan Suwiran, while the rest of us ordered foods that we shared together. Among the item, the most interesting food that we tried is their fried fish nyonya style. Very delicious and highly recommended if you ever attended the restaurant again. Yum!

Enjoy!

Bangi Kopitiam Braga CityWalk, Bandung

We visit this place by accident, as we are "stranded" in Braga CityWalk, waiting to pickup our parents from the hospital. As the place has been heavily renovated, we find plenty of new vendors in the mall. One of them is this: Bangi Kopitam.

Located conveniently in front of the mall, Bangi Kopitiam boasting various snacks and foods from Malaysia. Their signature item in the menu? Toasted Bun with two different Kaya topping and their coffee. In overall their food tasted great, especially with the discount that they are serving right now :).

Hopefully the discount are still available when we visit them again soon.

Enjoy!

Kuala Lumpur (Culinary) Trip in April 2013: I Love Yoo! Tiao

On our final day in Bukit Bintang, we decided to take one last quick round trip in the Pavilion Shopping Mall. Have not yet explored all of the restaurants here, we decided to visit their food courts.

Not feeling hungry, we tried to find some snacks there. And after a while of searching we finally found what we are looking for.

The outlet called I Love Yoo! Tiao, a mixed up between the sentence of "I love you" and Youtiao, the outlet serves a freshly fried Youtiao, or Chinese cruller. In Indonesia, their counterpart might be cakwe, who are also shaped similar.

Freshly made and fried on the spot, this Youtiao serves as a perfect goodbye for our happy trip in Kuala Lumpur.

Look forward to visiting this city again soon.

Enjoy!

Kuala Lumpur (Culinary) Trip in April 2013: Lunch in Front of Petronas Twin Tower

One of the tricks we learned during our trip abroad is that you can save quite a lot of money on meals by visiting the local stores and duplicating what the locals ate during their lunch/ dinner time.

And so, the time we visited the Petronas Twin Tower at KLCC (Kuala Lumpur Convention Center), we tried our best to copy what the local workers ate there. After a careful investigation, it seems that a lot of them prefer to eat on the go, with the choices of prepackaged nasi lemak and fried meals in supermarkets as the quick and fulfilling choice.

So we choose to have our meals just like them. With the open air view of Suria KLCC and its surrounding park, we downed two packages of nasi lemak and fried wonton.

Not bad. Perhaps it would be useful for us in case we are working in here. At least we already known where to eat our lunch :).

Enjoy!

Kuala Lumpur (Culinary) Trip in April 2013: Burger Bakar Abang Burn

Today we have the honor of being taken out by one of our best friend in Malaysia, Shazrin. He is currently working as a lecturer in UiTM, Malaysia.

He is visiting us all the way from Shah Alam, and tonight he brings us to this hip place called Burger Bakar Abang Burn.

It is a local franchise of grilled burger, that is quite famous here, with 15 chains are opened all around Malaysia. What so special about their course in our opinion is the gigantic serving that they served.

I ordered their burger, and they served their side dish of sausages, instead of regular fries. Other unique thing that we find here, is the addition of onion rings inside the burger and the hard-to-miss towering soda.

Really great place for hanging out with your friends.

Thanks Shazrin! Hopefully we can see you again soon!

Enjoy!

Kuala Lumpur (Culinary) Trip in April 2013: Ikea Damansara Food Court

We love visiting IKEA. Not just because of their simple furniture design, but also for their famous food courts.

Starting with their hot dogs, followed by their ice cream...

Then comes with the shopping...

After paying in the cashier, continuing our journey to their food court, and tasting their famous Swedish meat balls, grilled chicken, and chicken wings.

Yummy!

Thank God we take the bus to our hotel :).

Kuala Lumpur (Culinary) Trip in April 2013: Papa Rich

After a while of walking around Bukit Bintang, making a round trip around Paviliun shopping malls, and all the malls between them, we are getting hungry. As it was raining at that time, selecting a restaurant near our hotel was a great option.

We visited this restaurant: Papa Rich, which is located in walking distance from our hotel. The restaurant menu consisted of local Malaysian cuisine, with a modern/ traditional twist. Dishes like chicken porridge, the infamous nasi lemak, Singaporean Laksa, grilled bread with Kaya, and Nasi Campur. For beverage we ordered the traditional teh tarik.

The dishes served were quite fulfilling, and enough to give us more energy... to rest and continuing our travel tomorrow :).

Enjoy!
