George Town Curry Chicken and Dalcha (Contributed Article from Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

On 21 August 2014, I visited Penang Island aka George Town. The City
impression was very good. The city is clean, many historical buildings
and town squares were well preserved. I enjoyed my one day trip there
and delicious Indian dish in Little Indian square.

During lunch time, I chose to come to Kassim Mustafa restaurant, which
was near Indian market. I ordered chicken curry, butter rice and
dalcha. The taste of Indian taste were very strong (was it Indian
masala?). In my opinion, the spices were stronger than Indian food
which I ate in Bandung's Indian Restaurant. After I asked Kassim
Mustafa waiter, I knew that the dalcha soup main ingredients were
vegetables. Dalcha soup was suitable for vegan diet. The soup was
thick and savory.

According to trip expenses note, I spent 7 MYR for curry chicken,
butter rice, dalcha plus kopi tarik. Kopi tarik was coffee plus milk,
and were poured several times which made bubble.

I do hope to go there once again and try out chinese food in George Town.

Enjoy!

Woontoon Pork Noodle (Contributed Article by Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

I bought woontoon noddle pork near Ayutthaya train station before I
left Ayutthaya for Nongkhai. The price was 35 Thai Bath or about 1 US
dollar. The noddle was served with woontoon, sliced roasted pork,
vegetable and radish. I thought that 1 US dollar was not too expensive
for one bowl of woontoon noddle becuse I got a lot of woontoon and
roasted pork. Before I eat it, I poured nampla (fish sauce) and
grounded peanuts. Enjoy my dinner before night train ride.

Khoopat or Fried Rice in Thailand (Contributed Article from Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

On my transit at Dongdok station, Vientiane, I was very hungry so I
went to food stall to order food for lunch. The stall owner offered
khoopat which is fried rice in Thai language.  The price tag is 15k
Laos KIP (almost equal to 35 Thai Bath or 4 Malaysian Ringgit)

For about 1 US dollar, I got plain sup, sunny side fried egg, and
fried rice with shrimps. Sorry you can't see the shrimps on the
picture.

Anyway I also found fish sauce, and didn't know whether the fish sauce
is also called nampla here in Laos.

After I finished my lunch, I prepared myself for 24 hour bus ride
leaving for Hanoi.

Padthai on Hatyai, Thailand (Contributed Article by Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

My Thai friends brought me to restaurant for dinner. It was on Hatyai,
Thailand, near Malaysian border (Bukit Hitam). Well I let my Thai
friends decide what to order, and they agreed to order "patthai" or
mee goreng in Malay or fried noddle translated to English.

So let see what the restaurant served for three of us who were hungry
and thirsty. (please see attachment)
  • three cups of ice, plus glass bottled mineral water.
  • fresh raw vegetables/ salad which were served with ice on it
  • patthai or fried noddle.
Mee goreng were served with shrimps. For condiment, we could choose
white sugar, salty soybean sauce, grounded peanuts, pepper, and nampla
or fish sauce. I poured 3/4 spoon of fish sauce, and my Thai friend
said that I dropped too many fish sauce. I didn't regret it because
nampla is not too fishy or salty. I could taste the freshness of fish.

I do hope someday I visit Hatyai once more and eat patthai again.

Katjapiring: The Melting Pot of Flavors and Cultures

A common tradition in our family is having a dinner session together in a restaurant every Saturday/ Sunday night. This is the the opportunity for all family members to chat and have an intimate discussion, with added bonus for us is to try new venues around Bandung.

Today we tried the Katjapiring restaurant. It is not actually a new restaurant, as we have try them in PvJ somewhile ago. But since they reopened a new restaurant in Jalan Ciliwung, we have not have the chance to try them yet. Until now...

The restaurant is conveniently located in Jalan Ciliwung, just near the intersection with Jalan Bengawan. The design is colonial and good looking. Really interesting concept they have here.

We ordered several menu from the restaurant. Dad ordered the Mie Godog Jawan Suwiran, while the rest of us ordered foods that we shared together. Among the item, the most interesting food that we tried is their fried fish nyonya style. Very delicious and highly recommended if you ever attended the restaurant again. Yum!

Enjoy!

At first we were not quite sure about the flavor, but after a few sip we grew to like it. Overall it tasted like Lemonade (believe it or not). We really loved it.

Food Gifts from Vietnam

After our parents return from Vietnam, they brought us several snack gifts from Vietnam. The first one is some kind of traditional bakpia from there, while the other one is some kind of peanut.

The initial research of the brand "Khong Sac" via google has provided us with several images of lovely airlines stewardess taking selfie pictures with caption on Vietnamese language.

Hmmm... We guess either the brand is sponsoring an airlines there, or the meaning might be different :D.

Wait a Second, This is Not A Stewardess!

Anyway, for the second gift, the peanut, after closer inspection, it is revealed to be a package of dried lotus nut. After a quick search via Google it is revealed that this is a delicacy and considered as medicine in Chinese and Vietnam culture. Neat!

Homemade Fried Rice For An Empty Stomach

Feeling a little bit like cooking today.

We decided to try and cooked a plate of fried rice. For cooking, we tried to use the regular fried rice trick from the street vendor with the eggs being mixed inside the rice.

We also scavenge our refrigerator, and (literally) throw everything that is left there into our fried rice concoction.

The end result: overall okay fried rice. Not too proud with the end result, but enough to fill our empty stomach :D.

Enjoy!

End Result. Not too proud with it, but it gets us through the day :D

Let's Get Nostalgic: Warung Lela

Warung Lela has always become our favorite noodle vendor in Bandung since our college time. But since the location is quite far from where we lived, we have not visited them as often as we liked.

So, when the opportunity appeared, we took our time to visit the restaurant.

The food menu in overall are still the same. The noodle is still tasted great. And their pangsit goreng is as delicious as the last time we tried them.

In overall: it is (still) worth the trip. Enjoy!

Fried Rice Vendor at Sudirman Street, Bandung (Contributed Article by Ruben Juliarto)

This posting is contributed by Ruben Juliarto, our beloved friend and regular contributor for Jejak Rasa. Thank you and look forward to hear about your next article contribution bro!

Three hours bus ride to Bandung made us hungry. It was 10 pm so we decided to visit our usual chinese food hawker at Jl. Sudirman Bandung, which is near Marie Tunggal biscuit and gas/petrol station. The warung stands at left side for Cimahi direction.
We ordered fried rice and kwetiaw thick noodle. After sleeping with growling stomach at the bus ride, the fried rice was truly heavenly joy. 5 minutes later the plate was almost empty plate as you can see the report picture. Always remember our grandma wisdow, don't make any left over rice so we finished all of them with smile. While we were eating, we smell fine aroma of cooked food which made our stomach even fuller. The waiter also served us two glasses of tea, which tasted original Indonesian IMHO.

After it ended, it was costed 20k rupiahs. It will be less than $2 if we convert it to USD. Next time we will visit this nasi goreng warung again.

Bangi Kopitiam Braga CityWalk, Bandung

We visit this place by accident, as we are "stranded" in Braga CityWalk, waiting to pickup our parents from the hospital. As the place has been heavily renovated, we find plenty of new vendors in the mall. One of them is this: Bangi Kopitam.

Located conveniently in front of the mall, Bangi Kopitiam boasting various snacks and foods from Malaysia. Their signature item in the menu? Toasted Bun with two different Kaya topping and their coffee. In overall their food tasted great, especially with the discount that they are serving right now :).

Hopefully the discount are still available when we visit them again soon.

Gado-Gado Batununggal

The first time we found this restaurant is by coincident. Aswin wanted to have a gado-gado, and currently I have to visit Batununggal to post a package. After circling around in the area, I finally found one shophouse that sells gado-gado.

The vendor sells gado-gado, rujak cuka, noodle, and variation of Chinese foods. The gado-gado that they are selling is quite delicious, with lighter peanut sauce compared with the other vendors that we used to have. With the price of Rp 18.000 (around US$ 1,5) with lontong, it is quite a bargain and enough to fuel you through the day.

Enjoy!

Our (Culinary) Trip with Yogalates Community to Floating Market, Lembang

Situ Umar in Lembang has been transformed into tourism destination called Lembang Floating Market. It has been quite popular nowadays, therefore in the weekend this place always packed with tourists. The location itself used to be a fishing area for the locals and some said that it was quite dirty and not so delightful. Situ Umar was not popular either.

It was a long weekend with two holidays in between, so on Thursday our yoga class decided to have a trip to Lembang Floating Market. Since it was a holiday, we took a detour through Cihanjuang area and stopped for a moment at Tahu Susu Cihanjuang. We were quite right because the traffic was awesome and we arrived at already hectic Floating Market.

Floating Market located behind the Grand Hotel Lembang and once you entered the place, you saw a little lake surrounding with beautiful landscapes and there were saung and seating areas around the lake. We had to pay Rp. 10.000,- (+ US$1) for a ticket, but it also included with the welcoming drink. Our friend, Mala, already arrived early, so she booked a saung for us. After that we sat, enjoyed the view, and saw people passed by. We decided to have ala carte snacks, it consisted of spiraled crispy fried potatoes, grilled sausages, batagor, satay, combro, and tutut. We had to exchange our money with coins that valued Rp. 5000,- and Rp. 10.000,- each. The interesting things the vendor stalls were a boat, so it was mimicking the floating market in Thailand or Kalimantan.

The area itself were tourism spot for family, it had a full package for every member of the family. On one side there's rabbit park for children and you can sail a boat in the lake. I just like sitting down in our saung, have the snacks, and saw people passing by in front of us. Well, it was scorching there, the sun shined so brightly.
Enjoy!
