Things We Found in Keuken: Growbox

Keuken is an annual food festival in Bandung. Today is their fifth edition and it takes place in Bandung City Hall. There are several food vendors opening their stalls today and we have managed to sample several outlets that interests us.

For more information about Keuken, you can go and visit their website here.

Growbox

Growbox is a stall in Keuken which specialized in mushroom product. They are promoting mushroom as an alternative source of food, especially as meat substitute.

In this event they sell Mushroom Burger and Mushroom Hotdog. The taste is okay. What interests us is their signature Nature Immune Booster beverage, made from... Guess what! Mushroom.

At first we were not quite sure about the flavor, but after a few sip we grew to like it. Overall it tasted like Lemonade (believe it or not). We really loved it.

You can find their store in this address below.

Enjoy!

Hanging out at Kue Balok Kang Didin

 photo KB_1_zps07306649.jpg
This street vendor had been raved a lot and once a local newspaper published an article about this vendor. For your information, kue balok is a traditional snack from West Java area, it is made from flour and have a similar taste like pukis, waffle, or pancake. The difference is how they cooked, while the other are more modern, this one using specific equipment with brisket.

That day I had to pick up Aswin from the airport and since there still so much time until the airplane is landed, I decided to take a look this kue balok stall on jalan Abdurahman Saleh. The place wasn't hard to find because I could see motorcycles line up for on street parking and many people lounging around near the stall.

I opted for take away. I couldn't imagine myself hanging out with the youngster here. Well, I kind of tempted since the weather was cold and one or two drinks of wedang would warmed up my body. So, I just order 10 pieces of kue balok in variety of flavor, such as original, chocolate, and blueberry. The original one cost Rp. 1500,- and the one with flavoring cost Rp. 2000,-. I waited around 10-15 minutes for the kue balok.

Although some people said that it taste ordinary, but I think this one is quite different. It has more soft texture like pukis and after all it is good! So, I munched them while waiting Aswin in the airport.

Enjoy!

Riau Islands (Culinary) Trip in March 2013: Akau Potong Lembu, Tj. Pinang

Based on Haluan Kepri, Akau Potong Lembu is the biggest and the oldest culinary spot in Tanjung Pinang and the visitors not only people from the city, but tourist also come to this place. That's us! The place reminded me of pujasera in Gading Serpong we used to come and also in Night Market of Bangkok, Thailand.

It was almost late at night but the place was swarming with people and matter of fact it felt cozy and that's why people loved this place. We already had dinner with crabs and the friends, so we just ordered beverages, Aswin and I ordered ice tarik tea. I also took a bite of grilled cuttlefish, it was quite delicious, maybe because it was so fresh.

So, this place is very recommended to visit during your trip to Tanjung Pinang. Enjoy!

Things We Find in Car Free Day: Kerupuk Banjur

We are always amazed and excited when visiting Car Free Day event. Not only it was one way for us to drag our lazy feet to do exercise (We clocked around 2.5 miles of walking trip every time we go to Car Free Day event), but also because there are always something new to be found here.

For example, today I (Alia already knows it a couple of weeks ago) just realized that there is a vendor who sells Kerupuk Banjur in the event. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept of Kerupuk Banjur, it is local Indonesian fried crackers bathed, or drowned, in a liquid consisted of oncom sauce. If you have not got the picture, imagine a bowl of nachos that are bathed inside BBQ sauce. Well, the taste is not exactly the same, but you get the picture, right?

Anyway, for me this is like combining two of traditional elements (kerupuk and oncom) that are known tasted great individually. The result? One hell of a breakfast side-dish in my opinion. Ordered two of them with a lontong (rice cake) and a nice cup of coffee, I think you will have an exciting day ahead of you.

Enjoy!

Things We Find in Car Free Day Event: Traditional Mixed Fried Snacks

We love going to car free day event. For those of you who are not familiar with the Car Free Day event, it is an event held for a half of day in Bandung, where some specific road(s) are closed for cars and motorcycles. The road(s) usually then filled with activities such as aerobics, dancing, music performance, and amateur vendors.

There are currently two Car Free Day events in Bandung, held in Buah Batu and Dago area. We used to visit the Buah Batu event.

One of the main traits of Car Free Day event in our opinion is their foods. Before in our post we already discussed about some of them, including the Hotdog Colok vendor.

Today we will discussed about our another favorite vendor: The traditional mixed fried snacks vendor.
Located in the middle of the Car Free Day event, this vendor are run by a couple, and usually accompanied by their daughter.

They sell the traditional mixed fried snacks a la Bandung which consisted of bala-bala (fried vegetables), cireng (fried glutenous rice), tempe mendoan, and fried tofu. One of their main gimmicks is that they are frying them fresh and not using used oil, which makes the snack tasted better.

With the price of Rp 6.000,- (~US$ 0.5) you can have a decent breakfast menu. Beware though, as the food are being prepared fresh, sometimes you will have to wait for 15 minutes or more to get your serving.

But at the end, the waiting is worth it. Well, at least for us ^_^.

Enjoy!

Great Snack!

South Korea (Culinary) Trip in November 2012: Fried Snacks at Daepohang Port

After we had gone to Teddy Bear Farm on the way to our next venue, we went to Daepohang Port. Based on Korean Tourism websitelocated on the southern most point of Sokcho are the many raw fish restaurants and dried fish shops of Daepohang Port. This bustling port has become one of the most popular tourist spots for those in search of the freshest raw fish restaurants.

At Daepohang Port,  it is said that the Seorak Mountains and the East Sea are gifts from nature. The port is filled with raw fish restaurants and a live fish market containing eel, flatfish, flounder, yellowtail, and a plethora of other high-end seafood. Furthermore, the abundance of local dishes that can be found lining the streets includes ojingeo sundae and Gamja Songpyeon. For raw fish lovers that are in the Sokcho area, Daepohang Port is the place to be.

Even though, we were not hungry, but the stalls consist of variety fried snacks tempted us. Jenny told us that she would treat us there. Actually, it like gorengan in Indonesia, but maybe looked more like tempura style one. The interesting one is big squid, and they filled the inside with the rice as you can see in the picture. It was called ojingo sundae, their local dishes. Usually sundae, according to Wikipedia, is a Korean dish made generally by boiling or steaming cow or pig's intestines that are stuffed with various ingredients. It is a kind of blood sausage and believed to have been eaten for a long time. The recipes related to sundae can be found in Joseon cookbooks published in 19th century such as "Gyuhap chongseo" and "Siuijeonseo". Sundae can be made with seafood such as ojing-eo sundae (오징어 순대 squid sundae) and myeongtae sundae (명태 순대 Alaska pollock sundae). Since we're Muslim, we're not allowed to eat pig or blood so squid is Ok.

This area is developed as tourism area so you can see in the picture the construction is on progress. Well, I would love to see what they will become two or three years later.

Enjoy!
