Riau Islands (Culinary Trips) in March 2013: Otak-Otak Warisan pak Agu

Got this package from several medical doctors stationed in Batam and Bintan area. The shape and the taste of the otak-otak is very different compared with the one we used to eat here in Bandung or in Jakarta. The first difference is that the otak-otak tends to crumble easier compared with our version of otak-otak. Our theory suggest that the use of aci (some kind of flour) is very limited. The second difference is that this otak-otak must be using more fish compared with their counterpart here. The third difference is they have two version: the regular white version, and the red version which are imbued with chili.

We really liked them both. Hopefully we would be able to go there (or got a package sent to us? *hint*) sometimes soon in the future.

Enjoy!

Riau Islands (Culinary) Trip in March 2013: Kopi Selamat Pagi

Selamat Pagi!

Good Morning!

This is what we have tasted when we tried this coffee from Batam during our last trip there. The vendor stall was accidentally located during our search for cool beverages when we are "lost" in Nagoya Shopping District, Batam.
The taste of the coffee is quite strong! Inline with their name "Selamat Pagi". Really can kick start your morning in a positive way ^_^.

Enjoy!

Riau Islands (Culinary) Trip in March 2013: Kelong Restoran Tunteja 533

We couldn't get enough of seafood. Since it kind of abundant here and relatively cheap compared in Jakarta or Bandung, so why not have a dinner with seafood (again).

The place was quite far from the hotel, and since it was dark, I couldn't guest where are we right now. Just follow the crowd.

They were serving all kind of seafood like usual. We had deep fried flour battered shrimp, steamed fish, cap cay or stir fried vegetables, and chili crab, it was our favorite one. We also ordered fried chicken for the one who can't eat seafood. It was GOOD! Of course, nothing can beat the freshness of seafood while we're near the sea.

So, our tummy were full and got back to the hotel feeling tired but happy :D

Enjoy!

Riau Islands (Culinary) Trip in March 2013: Mega Bintan KM. 50

We left Tanjung Pinang in the morning after we went to Penyengat Island. Our next destination was Lagoi. According to Wikitravel, the area is located at the northern tip of the island, around 2 hours trip (70 km) by bus from Tanjung Pinang  and 45 minutes from Singapore by ferry. Lagoi is full of expensive resorts and manicured lawns, and it has very little in common with the rest of the island. It is known as Bintan resort and commonly misunderstood as a colony of Singapore because of its higher standards in infrastructures, utilities and security.

It is very much a family-oriented destination, there are currently five independently owned and operated beach resorts, four designer golf courses as well as a range of recreational facilities and attractions located within it. Most tourists come for its serene characteristic, where they can laze by the beach, enjoy spa, play golf and dabble in watersports. The area is separated from the rest of Bintan by thick forests, checkpoints, and armed guards.

We were stopped for a while in between our trip to have lunch at rumah makan Mega Bintan KM. 50. It is the type of warung that serve chicken/beef soup with clear  or coconut milk broth. It was remind me of warung my colleague, and I used to have for lunch in Serpong. As expected the soup was superb, but since the weather was so hot I was drizzled with sweat while eating, and that was when cold drinks became the savior. They provided a variety of drinks in the can which came from Malaysia.

Next: LAGOI. I'm very excited since I heard so many stories about this place and how beautiful and odd. Well, where else in Indonesia that the currency is in Singaporean Dollar.

Riau Islands (Culinary) Trips in March 2013: Kue Deram Deram, Penyengat Island

If we have kue Ali Agrem in Bandung, then people in Tanjung Pinang (or Penyegat Island) have kue Deram Deram. If you're not familiar with kue Ali Agrem or some people might called it kue Cincin then maybe you know about kue Cuhcur. Well, these three snacks are similar in taste, but the kue Ali Agrem is more similar in taste and appearance with kue Deram Deram. The shape like donuts and the taste is very sweet.

The snacks only available in Penyengat Island. The island has been known as tourist attraction in Tanjung Pinang, and to reach the island you have to take small boat. Based on Wikipedia, on Penyengat Island they have the old ruler's palace and royal tombs, among them the grave of the respected Raja Ali Haji, who was the creater and author of the first Malay Language grammar book, are one of the many legacies left by the Riau sultanate. The one which still in use is the old vice-royal mosque, the Mesjid Raya. To take you around the island, they have becak look a like transportation.

Actually, I like kue Ali Agrem, so I can't resist this kue Deram Deram. It has become our accompanying snack through our journey to Lagoi, Bintan. Well, we still kept one box to bring it as a gift to Bandung.

Enjoy!

Riau Islands (Culinary) Trip in March 2013: Akau Potong Lembu, Tj. Pinang

Based on Haluan Kepri, Akau Potong Lembu is the biggest and the oldest culinary spot in Tanjung Pinang and the visitors not only people from the city, but tourist also come to this place. That's us! The place reminded me of pujasera in Gading Serpong we used to come and also in Night Market of Bangkok, Thailand.

It was almost late at night but the place was swarming with people and matter of fact it felt cozy and that's why people loved this place. We already had dinner with crabs and the friends, so we just ordered beverages, Aswin and I ordered ice tarik tea. I also took a bite of grilled cuttlefish, it was quite delicious, maybe because it was so fresh.

So, this place is very recommended to visit during your trip to Tanjung Pinang. Enjoy!
