My Trip to Malang #3 (Contributed by Ruben Juliarto)

This current publication is contributed by Ruben, one of our close friend at SBM-ITB. This is the third part of his trip to Malang. Enjoy!

Baso Bakar
Sunday, I had to return home from Malang. The time to leave was three o'clock afternoon so I could walk around Malang before the train leaves. The plan for that day was to visit Pecel Kawi and Baso Bakar.

Pecel Kawi place is located at Kawi Road, not far from Ijen Boulevard. Ijen Boulevard was the widest road at Malang, has two opposite-direction lanes, and also provides two wide pedestrian lanes where you can stroll around looking for Old Dutch house. I always thought that there is nothing more relaxing than strolling around at morning times.

My Trip to Malang #2 (Contributed by Ruben Juliarto)

This current publication is contributed by Ruben, one of our close friend at SBM-ITB. This is the second part of his trip to Malang. Enjoy!

Saturday at Malang, I was tired as hell after the Bromo tour. I saw the sunrise at Penanjakan. From Penanjakan I also saw the fog which covered the sea of sand at the bottom. Next destination was Bromo crater, where I took more than 300 steps of stair to get to the top.

Bakmi Nongkrong & Mie Tolol

After one of our favorite vendor at BEC food court is closed, we have been in a constant search for a new food spot in that food court. After several visits there, at one time me and Ruben goes there to find something to eat. Then a vendor quickly attracts my attention.

The Search for Alternative Martabak Vendor (Martabak pak Salim)

The Inflation of Martabak price in Bandung, has forced me to try and find alternatives for the once great San Francisco Martabak. Fortunately, Bandung as one of the major foodie paradise in Indonesia has not let me down. One of the many alternative is this vendor, Martabak pak Salim. Located in the pavement of Jl. Burangrang, which are known as one of the main foodie attraction in Bandung, this vendor has produce Martabak which are almost as good as the San Francisco does, but with lesser price.

Martabak in Indonesia can be categorized into two major types: the sweet one, and the savory one. Almost all Martabak vendor that I know can create both of this dishes. The sweet one always reminds me of a heavyweight pancake, while the savory one is similar in taste like the Vietnamese spring roll.

Bon Appetit!

Kopi Progo, Jl. Progo Bandung

The first time I went here. Haven't tried their food yet, just the coffee. Overall the taste is similar with other coffee vendors. Perhaps next time I ordered their specialty coffee for more depth.

Rujak & Asinan Pungkur

Got here by accident, we decided to try and give it a go. We ordered Kolak Campur and Rujak Asinan while we are there. The taste overall is quite good, although we assumed that the price is a bit premium compared with other vendors. But it's a refreshing taste. If you are happens to be around jalan Pungkur, don't forget to drop by here.

I went to Malang last month to attend a conference, so I had the best time to explore this small town. This town is famous for old colonial building, as we can see from the train station as soon as we arrive there. FYI I took the train as my mean transporation to get there, and it took one night from Bandung to Malang.

Another Flavor of Cupcakes in "Disini" Bakery

Ok. I've been telling you about this one little shop in the corner of Cikawao called "Disini" in here. First time, I went there there's only one flavor of cupcake, red velvet, but when I accidentally came to the shop again to pick up Aswin, suprisingly there was four (or three?) flavor of cupcakes: chocolate, orange, cappucino(?), and red velvet. (Note to myself to take picture of the cupcakes at the shop). So, I took one for every flavor and amazingly it was taste good for every flavor but for now my is the ORANGE! My God it is that GOOD! Since it is so good, I forgot to take the picture of the little cupcakes. :D

Tahu Sumedang Mesjid Darussalam

One of my guilty pleasures. Every time I finished the Friday praying near my house, I could not resist the temptation to buy a bag of Tahu Sumedang from this vendor. This deep fried dish originated from Sumedang area (thus the name suggested) is great to be eaten as snack, or side dish for your lunch.

When you go to Bangkok

Actually, this trip was happened two years ago and some of the story I already wrote it in my (other) personal blog-which is now in half hiatus mode-in here. The journey was very memorable for us and we are looking forward to come to this city again. Here are the place you must visit when you go to Bangkok:

Khao San Road

I kind of forget about the name of the place, but I will just write the description that I wrote before in my (other) blog.

Night Life on Khao San Road
Kiosks and stalls along the road

Crepes & Co.

Basically, this is one of the best crepes I (We) ever had, the place kind of memorable and thanks to Novin for taking us there.

Inspired by the constant bombardment of great cuisines from all over the world in our cable TV channel, we decided to cook ourselves some of the dishes that presented there. Pempek 10 Ulu Pak Anang on Rainy Day

Yesterday, while driving home from campus, we decided to stop by to have some something to eat. It was rainy, so we have the option to go eat baso tahu or pempek. But along the way, we finally decided to eat pempek. Without second thought we stroll directly to our new favorite pempek spot: Pempek 10 Ulu pak Anang. The vendor is located at jalan Veteran, Bandung, and you might missed it if you are driving in a hurry because of their small shop.
Although the vendor is small, but you can always see people come and drop by to taste their pempek. We don't blame them. The taste of their pempek is very good, and we suggest that this is because they use plenty of fresh fish as their main ingredients. Their price is also not quite expensive. For two portion of hearty pempek + drink costs us around Rp 50.000,- (US$ 6). So the next time you find yourself craving for pempek in Bandung, especially in a rainy day, then you can stop by at Pempek 10 Ulu pak Anang.
