Welcome Home: Nanny's Pavillon Housewarming

On 30th of April 2014, we were invited to the housewarming of the newest Nanny's Pavillon restaurant in Jalan R.E. Martadinata (Riau), Bandung. As we recalled, the last time we have ever visited this restaurant was a couple of years ago, when they first opened their first branch in the other side of Jl. Riau.

The Facade

Nanny's Pavillon back then were famous for their pancake, so with this invitation we were super excited. Are there any new meals being served here? Really making us anxious.

In the restaurant, we were greeted by Mbak Ai from Sindikat Kuliner. She is there on the behalf of the restaurant to greet food writers who were invited. Brief explanation from Mbak Ai suggested that currently all of the existing Nanny's Pavillon branch in Bandung (Istana Plaza, Setiabudi, Riau, and Trans Studio Mall) are all being merged into this restaurant.

The restaurant concept is unique, as it depicted the real layout of a regular house. From the guest room which functioned as ... you guest room to welcome the guest who dined here and cashier, continued to the living room, dining room, kitchen, children bedroom, bathroom (this one really fun!), back terrace, and master bedroom. As it seems that the current old house building for this restaurant is not renovated and kept like the original.

The bathroom is the one room that attracts me the most. Very unique, and it is reminded us to this restaurant in Taiwan hehehe... The dining room area is also caught our attention, as it can house for a family meeting of 20 people or so. Very big and convenient.

The Menu

For housewarming, we are presented with four dishes and two type of beverages. The food consisted of Carla's Chicken Schnitzel, Elise's Lasagna, Kim's Tuna Baked Rice, and Olivia's Green Tea Pancake. For the beverages it consisted of Mint Lemonade and Mango Cocktail. We opted for the Kim's Tuna Baked Rice and Olivia's Green Tea Pancake for our meals, and each of Mint Lemonade and Mango Cocktail for beverages.

Kim's Baked Tuna Rice

The Tuna Baked Rice tasted superb, with mozzarella topping and warm tuna on top. The Olivia's Green Tea Pancake is exactly what we expected from Nanny's Pavillon as one of the restaurant that introduced the savory and variation concept of pancakes in Bandung. Very light and you can really tasted the Green Tea.
For the beverages, the Mint Lemonade and the Mango Cocktail are very refreshing.

After a hearty meal and nice conversations, we talked and chat.. until we realized it is already six o'clock! Wow, how time travel past when you have good companion, nice meal, and warm place to visit :).

Really looking forward for our next visit here. Perhaps with the extended family members, so we can eat in the dining room? Or just the two of us hanging out in the bathroom area? One thing for sure, we will definitely returned here again soon :).

Enjoy!

Karnivor: Let's Meet Your Meat!

Today I am taking Alia to go visit a Hijab Exhibition in Siliwangi Stadium. Knowing Alia's shopping habit. I believe it would take at least two hours of her time to visit there. Stranded in Riau area, I am quickly heading to a  place where we have intended to visit for quite some time.

The place is called Karnivor, and based on the name given, it is not a quite suitable place for our fellow vegans. The restaurant is famous for their enormous sized portion of meat, some so legendary that you should consume it with fellow RT/ RW neighbors :).

As I am flying solo today, I decided to go easy on the ordering. By easy, I mean only ordered one main menu, one side dish, and one beverage. This is a standard menu ordering for those of you who knows me.

After seeing the serving, I might have to reconsider my standard menu ordering next time here...

Their portion is gigantic. The main course of Sirloin steak and the dessert of ORO (Oreo Dijero: Deep Fried Oreo) are gigantic. Enough said, with embarrassed face asked for a doggy bag to bring home.

Lesson learned: I might have to skip my breakfast first next time I am visiting this restaurant :).

Enjoy!

Cikawao Steak: Affordable Steak with Old Time Twist

Has been craving to visit this place for some time, and today is finally the day for me to visit this place. The last time I have visited this restaurant is perhaps more than 5 (five) years ago, and still nothing has changed much for this place (well, except the price).

The layout of the restaurant is pretty simple. The front right section consisted of the grill and cashier. The back right section consisted of kitchen. The left area of the shop house is used for customer.

The menu is quite regular, with the addition of Wagyu beef (it has not been a trend back in the early of 2000).

What makes this steak vendor unique is their no frills policy with their menu. Strictly steak, with traditional sides of french fries and/ or onion ring. No exotic names. Just your plain old Sirloin, New York, Tenderloin, and T-Bone steak.

And this my friend, is one of the reason besides their good taste and nostalgia, that keeping consumer coming here over and over again.

Jakarta (Culinary) Trip in June 2013: Joni Steak Pasar Baru Jakarta

Before we know this place, only HolyCow and HappCow are the only name that comes in our mind when talking about cheap and "real" steak. But now there is one name pops out, and it pops out in a place we never thought about. Introducing: Joni Steak!

You might think: Joni... You mean like in the first name Joni? Does it sound a little bit cheesy you think?

Yes, at first the name does not look supportive enough. But, if you think of it, some of the great chefs in the world are using their name for their brand. From the famous one and only Daniel Boulud to the famous meeting place in Jakarta Mario's Place, where some says power negotiation about the future of our country are often discussed here. So, we think it is ok for Mr. Joni to put his name here. After all, this is his outlet, right? :)

Ok, enough about the name. Let's talk about their food. We think they sell one of the best bargain steak in Jakarta right now. I mean back around 2012, they sell steak for as cheap as Rp 35k (US$ 3.5). The current price has already hike for around Rp 42k - 66k (US$ 4.2 - 6.6), but for this you already got Wagyu with the amenities. Quite a bargain eh?

Surprisingly with that price, they still maintain a great quality for a steakhouse. We never found a quite well steakhouse with old style service using managers who circle around and take orders until we went here. Sure, the place is humbling, but they don't mess with the service quality.

Another great point which we often discuss here is: They can serve a medium rare steak. This is a very rare traits that only a good steakhouse in Indonesia can provide. You cannot imagine countless time we went to steakhouse, ordering a medium rare steak, and then finds that they served in medium well, or worst: well done. -__-".

So, the next time you are around Pasar Baru area, and confused on where to eat or where to take your spouse to eat or when searching for a place for celebration, but with tight budgets, then we think this is the perfect place for you to go. Great steak, good service, and most importantly reasonable price.

Enjoy!

Abuba Steak: Large Steak with Local Price

Saturday night is a night that is always producing a confusing end for us. The problem usually lies when all of the family members gathered and making a plan to go and visit a certain restaurant. Along the way, then came the great debate of "where to eat?", "what to eat?", "that restaurant is always full", and our most favorite debate of all time: "it is too crowded to go there during weekend".

And so this weekend night also started with the similar debate. In fact, only when we are on the road leading nowhere, we come up with this idea: Let's eat at Abuba Steak.

Located in Jalan Pelajar Pejuang (Lingkar Selatan), just two building after Rogers Spa, the restaurant is already full of customer vehicles. Luckily, we managed to find a spot just before the restaurant.

The design is modern, with clean and unsophisticated chairs and tables. We quickly found a spot in the center of the restaurant.

Their specialty menu is their steak. They have variety of different type of meat to be cooked at their grill. For the beef, we can choose what part of cow that you like: Rib Eye, Sirloin, Tenderloin, T-Bone, and Bolar Blade. You can choose the grade of your meat: Wagyu, US, NZ, or local beef. Finally, you can choose the level of meat cooking to your liking. However, they only served just one type of sauce: their original BBQ sauce.

Special Sauce photo IMG_20140131_194846_zpsf5c1ed0d.jpg
Their bottle of special sauce (don't mind the background...)
We ordered the NZ Sirloin, Tenderloin, Rib Eye, Meltique, and Beef Patty Steak with the sides of saute vegetables and french fries. For snack, we ordered their grilled meat ball. Beverages including Banana Colades, Armageddon, Star fruit juice, and Iced Tea. The serving was generous and they are cooked into perfection.

The overall dining experience was nice, and with the competitive price tag, it was a wonderful night.

Warung Steak Pasadena

I will begin this post with an unusual plead.

In Bandung, there were so many old school steak house which serves great steak, but with the presence of new funky so called steak house with no identity, the old school steak house have become a rare vendor.  Sometimes it amazes me to eat in a so called steak house, but they also served rice, japanese, and even chinese food in it. I mean, c'mon! Steak house should only serves steak and potato, not steak with rice. Italian food is acceptable for me, but Indonesian, Chinese, even Japanese food? -_-".

Sadly, because they upheld the tradition and only serves steak (and the occasion Italian food), most of the new customers do not goes there. The result is whether they changed the strategy (and sells wider range of foods), or rely on regular customers who really liked the old school way.

The same case is probably happening in this steak house. We have been passing this vendor everytime we went to Paris Van Java (PvJ). Every time we passed it we swear to visit it the next time we went to PvJ. Finally after tenth or so visit to PvJ, we decided that we should go there exclusively without going to PvJ first.

The place is very old school, which we liked, a lot. Their menu is very straight forward, which we liked, a lot. They can serves the meat in accordance to our request, in this case medium rare, which we liked, a lot. And they serves a big portion of steak. So big, we thought we ordered a steak in Texas (where everything is bigger there), which we liked, a lot. Lastly, their price is very affordable, around Rp 60.000 (US$ 6) per portion, which we really liked, a lot.

In the end, this steak vendor is a dying breed. And for steak lover like us, we think it is one of the last few places in Bandung where we can get a great original old schooled steak.

Porto Restaurant, Setiabudhi Bandung

It is been a while since we tasted a great steak, especially in Bandung. So when invitation came for family gathering to celebrate our nephew's birthday, we are really excited.
The place is new for us, as we are rarely eat in Setiabudhi area, due to its traffic.

When we got there our first impression is: what a great place. Our architects instincts are suddenly tingling as the decor and interior of the restaurant really catching on us.

The menu is quite lavish, and as we came in big group (30+ family members), we have the pleasure of being served by their chef personally. Yay!

The food tasted superb, and just to let you guys drool, we will just show you the pictures ^_^.
