Dinner with Alex and Christa at Gourmet 90

On one night, our Dad is being visited by his colleague, Alex from Holland. So to honor his visit, he decided to arrange a dinner with several of Dad colleagues and Alex friends. We are invited because one of Dad's student from Holland, and one of our friend, Christa is invited.
Gourment 90 is selected because it serves mixture of Eastern (Japanese) and Western food. It also chosen because of the coziness of the place.

Unlike other nights, the place was quite empty when we go there. We assume that it was because the pizza bar located upstairs was closed. Luckily, the menu of Gourmet 90 are not affected. Most of us ordered the steak, pasta, and Japanese food. There are two dishes that are standing out from the crowd. The first one is the Salmon skin appetizer. It tasted quite unique, and honestly it was not for everyone's taste preference. The second one is what Alia ordered. The Dynamite Roll. Imagine a regular dynamite roll, then pumped and juiced with steroid to reach almost 10x times of it's original size? That is the Gourmet 90 infamous dynamite roll hehehe...

After this, we admit that we are curious to try the other Japanese foods on the menu. Maybe on our next visit.

Gelato Secrets by Maria and Carlo Lentini

From their website, they write that the secrets of their products are love and passion for gelato. The creation of Gelato Secrets is a way for them to share it with others. The gelato is inspired from the childhood memory and love for gelato. The owners are Maria and Carlo Lentini, they bring this wonderful dessert to Bali with the authentic taste from Italy and a twist of best ingredients in the island. Savour this wonderful combination of tastes and discover the art of Gelato.

They said that good food comes from great ingredients and coming from the basic rule of cooking, we believe that you can get the best taste just by exploring the best quality of ingredients. The great welcome to other cultures in Bali has let them to enjoy the greatest cuisine from around the world. “East meet west”, it is their passion to share those incredible discoveries to us.

It was one of the best ice cream or gelato I ever had and I regret that I just ate it once and using cup not their cone :( which was handmade. Definitely will go there again this time and maybe with two scoops ice cream on a cone. Forget about the clean eating on vacation hehehe...By the way, it is ranked #18 in Tripadvisor from all restaurants in Ubud. So, that time I choose the rum raisin gelato, my all time ice cream flavor and the price was quite reasonable, it was Rp. 20.000,- for a cup or cone. By the testimonial in Tripadvisor, their recommended flavors are chocolate, mango, oreo, tomato basil, rose petal, salted butter caramel and gingerbread. Well, I think all the flavors worth trying hehehe...

Gelato Secrets also has their branch in Sanur, it is the nearest one from Kuta or Nusa Dua, I think. Well, to try this gelato is a must! Squeeze your time to have this incredible ice cream ever.

Enjoy!

Kou Cuisine: Handmade Jam and Salt

Kou Cuisine is little shop on jalan Monkey Forest and you might missed it. They sell handmade jam, Kusamba sea salt, and Jenggala  Ate Tableware. Actually they also have shop which sell natural handmade soap, Kou Soap on jalan Dewi Sita and I was in love with their soap, I think it is one of the best natural soap I've ever had. When I was went to Bali last year, I didn't buy the jam and I kind of regret it. People love their Milk Caramel Jam, I think that time Monike bought a jar of it.

The interior and facade of the shop is cute! We couldn't hold ourselves just to take some pictures on front of the store and at night it was quite lovely. Definitely one of my stop during my visit to Ubud this day. Well, the handmade jam is great for gift since it nowhere to find in Bandung.

Enjoy!

(Ubud) Bali Culinary Lists: Warung Sopa, the Pure Vegetarian Restaurant

Clean your stomach and open your heart.Happy life with Warung Sopa!

Based on Balispirit website, Warung Sopa is the Balinese young brother of Sopa Cafe in Madrid, Spain. A nice combination of Japanese & Spanish owners project for sharing with us. It is 100% vegetarian and mostly vegan cafe and soup bar. Warm soups for yogis like pumpkin, green peas, corn or the fantastic gazpacho for nourishing your body.

They recommend Nasi campur, a mixed combination of Indonesian Balinese delicacies like banana flower salad or our great Taco Rice and for dessert lovers try they famous carrot cake and the new coconut pie and delicious papaya cake, also their best chai in town. On Sundays they have a nice market for fresh organic vegetables, home made miso, natto and Sopa brand marmelades, chutneys, tahini and more.

The restaurant is ranked #77 in Tripadvisor and the reason we came to the restaurant because of  their advertisement. It looked interesting. So, during our survey, we had lunch in this restaurant. The place actually quite secluded and around the restaurant was settlement area, there was no other commercial place beside Warung Sopa. Because based on our survey in Ubud, the commercial area was near the Puri, from Monkey Forest road and then spread to jalan Hanoman, jalan Dewi Sita and jalan Sugriwa was on the West side of jalan Hanoman.

The place looked nice, typical of Japanese interior, clean, white and wood, a bit of pop color. The interesting one was the flower arrangement on the table, little unusual, the waitress said that the owner, the Japanese one was also the florist and everyday she arranged the flower on the table. During that time, we happened to see the owner, just finished arrange it. They had corner full of Japanese books and a playground for children.

We ordered green peas soup, taco rice, and banana smoothies for the drink. Well, I wanted to try their green peas soup and how is the tasted. Well, just like we expected the food kind of bland, what to expect from Vegan food? :P My green peas soup tasted like the usual bubur kacang ijo most Indonesian used to eat. It made sense because they weren't used milk at all, instead of coconut milk, so why the taste similar with bubur kacang ijo. But, I love the Banana  Smoothies.

By the way, I bought their Mango jam for Aswin and it was good. Definitely will buy their jam again when I come to Ubud. , well, it was great experience, I think it was my first vegetarian restaurant. But  next time I come here will try their Nasi Campur.

Enjoy!

(Ubud) Bali Culinary Lists: Japanese Cakery at Kakiang Bakery

When you strolled along jalan Dewi Sita in Ubud, you won't miss this little shop, Kakiang Bakery. During the survey with my friend, Monike, we always passed this shop and quite curious with the little bakery shop. One morning before started our survey, we decided to have morning coffee and take a bite its cake.

Well, the store was cramped but they still provided seating area in the shop, while on the wall there were varieties of natural products. The cakes, breads and cookies looked delicious, it was mouthwatering. I decided to have my one of favorite cake Strawberry Shortcake, it always reminded me of Japanese drama called SOS (Strawberry On the Shortcake) starred by Kyoko Fukada :D Monike choose Mango tart, which I found out later that it was their best seller. I also had black coffee and it included little cookie. The cakes was very delicious, I like this kind of cake, just like the one in Miki Ojisan No Mise. It guess it was typical of Japanese cake, very light and not too sweet. The Mango tart was also very good, well...the mix of Japanese cake with Indonesian fruit, you can't find nowhere but here.

Suddenly, I remembered Aswin, he will also love this bakery, so I bought the Almond Cookies and the Tuiles, it was a thin, crisp sweet or savory cookie or wafer made of dough or cheese. Originally from France, 'tuile' means tile in French, and is named after the shape of French roof tiles it is supposed to resemble. They are commonly added as garnishes to desserts such as panna cotta or used as edible cups for sorbet or ice cream (Wikipedia, 2012)

So, it was definitely a must to come here again. Maybe this time I will try the one in Pangosekan, considering it also restaurant. It is ranked #89 by Tripadvisor. So, when you have a holiday in Ubud, just squeeze your little take to have the cakes here. It will add touch to your vacation.

Enjoy!

Bali Culinary Lists: Ultimo the Italian Restaurant

Ultimo is an Italian restaurant in Seminyak, Bali and it was ranked #11 in Tripadvisor. We went here in 2009 with our friends, the place basically on the hottest spot in Seminyak near Rumours and other famous restaurants. We had to wait quit long just to be seated, there's bar area and it was also already packed with people. So, we just looked around their menu that was put in front of the restaurant and surprisingly it wasn't as expensive as we thought, comparing with the price in Jakarta.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was great, the light was dim, and although it was crowded by people but still relaxing and cozy. We choose part of the restaurant that was open air and when it was started to rain, they had the automatic roof which was very interesting.

So, maybe we will consider to go here again because last time we went here it was great!

Bali Culinary Lists: Nasi Campur in Bali

We're actually in Bali today and for days we've been very excited to go on holiday here. No more Journal reading and Thesis/Dissertation writing for five days and Aswin said maybe we will have a revelation there, but yeah we still worried about our research. Ok forget about it. So, we kind of recapping our previous writing about culinary in Bali. So, for a few days it will be all about Bali in Jejakrasa. First, it's about Nasi Campur Bali, well we don't have many pictures but we've got some information about it from our friend, Ari Mardawa who currently reside in Bali.

 Enjoy!

Warung Wardani Signage

Warung Wardani
It's the infamous nasi campur Bali, taste good but for some people the taste more "Javanese" than Balinese. It is quite expensive comparing with the other nasi Bali. It cost Rp. 25,000,- and don't worry it's Halal food. We've been here once in 2009, I've had a trip with my whole family here and it thanks to Air Asia it only cost Rp. 75.000,- per person to Bali. So, I think it's good, worth to try :)
Jalan Yudistira No. 2, Denpasar - Bali

Warung Adnyana
For some people they prefer this nasi Bali, more spicy and more Bali like. The price is cheaper than Warung Wardani around Rp.20,000,- We also went here in 2009 and my friend from Bali, Ari Mardawa or we called him AMK who treated us the meal. Yeah, it also tasted good, but what I remember also from the trip to this place was someone throw up in front of our table. Not a good sight but it was unforgettable memory.
Jalan Patimura, Denpasar - Bali

Based on the list given by my friend, in Satria area has been well known for its Warung Nasi Campur Bali: Wardani, Adnyana, and Satria. The oldest one is Satria and Adnyana with the taste of Bali, while Wardani has mixed with taste from Java. The third one, Warung Satria is located on Jalan Kedondong.

Nasi Pedas Bu Andika
The very well known Nasi Pedas in Bali. It is located near Joger Shop and stall is in front of store, so basically it's street food. I always went there, every time I came to Bali. On high season, the place is crowded and sometimes you eat without table. The special one is the chicken skin, it's spicy and crispy. The price range is around Rp. 12,000 - 25,000,- Last year when I went to Bali for research, the first place I visited after I landed in Bali was this place. Still good and can't wait to go here again this time but beware of the beggar that walking around you while you are eating, it is annoying and not a pretty sight.
Jalan Raya Kuta, Kuta - Bali

Nasi Pedes Bu Andika
The Stall

Nasi Kadewatan Bu Mangku
I went here to have lunch with Monike, one of my partner in the research team. We had to go to government office in Gianyar and also Neka Museum, so at lunch hour we asked the driver to take us to this nasi Kadewatan, which was quite far from Ubud village. But it was worth it, the rice was delicious and I will go there again. So, based on the information on the internet, this vendor also have the branch in Denpasar and Petingenget area.

There's also another vendors that my friend recommend in Bali that we haven't got the chance to visit like

Nasi Campur Pantai Segara Sanur
It was only opened from 7 am till 9 am. The rice is kind of spicy and good, also you have to be patience with the queue. And many tourists after try this rice become fans and always come here when they are in Bali.
