Street Vendors Near Saparua: The Morning Venue

When we want to have a morning meeting in Bandung, sometimes it is quite difficult to find one great place to go, especially if you are considering to have traditional foods in the center of Bandung. So, in this Sunday morning, we've decided to go and try some of the dishes at Saparua Sport Center.
There are several great vendors opened here, including the Liebel Dimsum, and several Chicken Porridge and Nasi Kuning vendor.
After a quick scan throughout the vendors, we've decided to visit Chicken Porridge and Nasi Kuning vendor, as this place was fully crowded. The Chicken Porridge was ok, but the Nasi Kuning tasted great. Nearby there is also a tahu pletok and tempe mendoan (soy-based fried snacks) vendor which is also crowded. The tahu pletok was great! Overall we spent around Rp 30.000 (US$ 3) for three people's breakfast. Not bad eh?

Koffie Fabriek Aroma Bandoeng

This visit to Kopi Aroma store and also factory was done around year ago, when I was one of the home committee of Asian Conference on Environmental Behavior Studies (AcE-Bs) in Savoy Homann, Bandung. The visit was included as a part of our city tour program that was being held after the conference was done.

Actually, the group of participants were not straight coming to Kopi Aroma, but we stopped our bus on  Jl. Braga and then take a walk around the area behind the commercial building in Braga which was considered as one of the slum area in Bandung because of their density and sprawled buildings. So, we walked through the narrow streets between buildings in Kampong Braga until we reached the Kopi Aroma, which was located on Jl. Banceuy. Mostly the participants of this city tour were Malaysian, so they quite surprise what they found along the way in Kampong  Braga, because they didn't have that kind of settlement area in Malaysia. As we found at our visit to Kuala Lumpur, the city was planned well by their government, not like ours.

When we arrived at the Kopi Aroma around 9 am, the store was still closed and Jl. Banceuy wasn't hectic like usual, because all the store was still closed and also the street vendors weren't there yet. For taking the group to Kopi Aroma we have to make appointment first with the owner or someone responsible with the shop and they told us that they weren't allowed the whole group entering the factory at the same time but we divided into group of ten peoples. We saw that even before the shop is opened, there were already many peoples waiting in front of the store, I think to buy the coffee, maybe they were re-seller or something. Actually, we can find Kopi Aroma in supermarket like Griya/Yogya and Setiabudi Market in Bandung, but in Jakarta you can find it in Food Hall Supermarket, but of course the price is more expensive.

The store and factory was quite old, have the kind of vintage atmosphere, even the tools they have were so old, but I think that what made the store and factory interesting. As I entered the factory area, I could see how the coffee beans being stored and roasted. After that the group were lining up to buy the coffee for souvenir. Someone even said that actually she didn't like drinking coffee but the good smell of the coffee made her bought it.

So, coffee fans? You should go to Kopi Aroma, but better go there in the morning when the area still quiet and not crowded.

Nasi Goreng Pak Suyud: Delicious Fried Rice with Huge Portion

We know this place as recommendation from one of our high school friends, but according to Alia, this place has been here for ages -__-". Hmmm... Why I never tried it before is still a mystery, but the important thing is that we're here!
For this trip we are accompanied by four of our cousins and Christa, our friend from Netherlands. We were really surprised that she is cool to be taken to street food vendor like this, but as many great traveler used to say: The best food is not in the restaurant. The best food usually can be found along the streets.
Their specialty is Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) and Mie Goreng (Fried Noodle). What makes them tasted so great is that they still using coal to cook the rice and the noodle. This gives a distinct characteristics for the food which makes them tastier than their competitor.
Their portion is also huge. Note to ourselves, the next time we go here we might ordered one portion for two. Enjoy!

We All Like PT. Rasa's Ice Cream

One of our favorite Ice Cream vendor in Bandung. We really liked it because of it's creamy texture and variety of flavors. Besides the familiar vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors, they also sells the variation of the classics ones, including Frambozen, Banana, Chocolate Chip, Cheese Cookies, and my newest favorite: Ogura.
So the next time you are in town, and craving for Ice Cream, this is one of the place that you don't want to miss. Enjoy!

Great Hang out Place: Bengawan Solo Coffee at Cihampelas Walk

We know Bengawan Solo long time ago, when we still living in Jakarta. We liked them as they provide a cheaper and more delicious alternative compared with other coffee vendors. And other plus side is that they are local brand! So, while you enjoyed great coffee in a great atmosphere, you are also supporting the local business. Great! disfrutar de su café!

Six Layers Color of Happiness: Rainbow Cake at Disini Bakery

Based on TermWiki, rainbow cake is a confection made with layers of brightly colored, almond-based sponge cake, apricot and/or raspberry jam, and a chocolate coating.

After a while finally we were able to try the famous and currently trendy Rainbow Cake at Disini Bakery. We already upload the picture in the twitter, and the comments being generated was phenomenal. Most of them really like to try the cake, and some of them who have tried it says that this was the most neat Rainbow Cake that they ever seen. And for the price of Rp 24rb/ slice (around US$ 2,5/ slice) it was considered as a bargain. Enjoy!

Homemade Potato Salad

Several days ago, we saw an article in the news that discussed about the benefits of potato. How for 100gr of potato compared with rice, the calorie difference was at 70 to 200 per 100gr. For that, we decided to make a potato salad for ourselves.
The recipes was basically a modified Michael Smith recipe, with a little twist of leftover ingredients in our home. The result was quite OK. Maybe next time we can make it again for breakfast or lunch :). Enjoy!

Homemade Potato Salad

Ingredients:
500gr baby potato (you can use regular potato), cut in half
1 stick (?) spring onion, chopped finely
Beef bacon/ Sausage/ Meat of your choice
1/2 cup of milk
100gr of shredded sweet corn (or you can change it with nuts)
Stale bread
Olive Oil
Salt
Pepper
Worcester Sauce

How to make:
Cook the potato in a batch of boiled water. After finished drain the water.
Cook the shredded sweet corn in olive oil, add the meat, salt, pepper, and Worcester sauce.
Meanwhile cooked the stale bread in the oven until crisp to make a crouton.
Add the potato into the cooked sweet corn, add the chopped spring onion, and milk.
After finished, just present it into your finest salad bowl. Add the crouton and other topping such as cheese or nuts for finishing touch.
You can also add spinach as other source of greens in the salad in the very end of your cooking.
Enjoy!

Our Visit to Brussels Spring in 2007

Actually, this was our visit to Brussels Spring in 2007, around 5 years ago and this blog hadn't even started yet and we were still reside in BSD (Jakarta). Well, we like the place, and I really think their waffles are delicious, even comparing with any other vendor we found in Jakarta at that time.

The place is beside the Soleluna cafe we reviewed earlier in our blog and at that time Brussels Spring was the only cafe in the area. So, the place is great for have cat with your friend, hang out on Saturday night. Enjoy!

Dinner with Christa at Praoe

On one weekend, we are having a guest from Netherlands, one of the exchange student from Leiden University, Christa. So, we decided to take her on a dinner. After discussing from the morning, we've decided to take her to the Praoe Seafood in Jalan Sumatera.
In Bandung, Seafood restaurants are quite rare, so that is why it was great to have a new Seafood restaurant here, as we really liked Seafood (Crab to be precise).
We ordered the combination of Indonesian and International seafood menu, consisted of Fried Gurame and Tofu (very Indonesian), and Chili Crab (Singaporean). For dessert, we ordered some of their signature dessert which we really liked.
At the end we went home happily and with full tummy. Hopefully Christa also enjoyed the food here.
