After we had gone to Teddy Bear Farm on the way to our next venue, we went to Daepohang Port. Based on Korean Tourism website, located on the southern most point of Sokcho are the many raw fish restaurants and dried fish shops of Daepohang Port. This bustling port has become one of the most popular tourist spots for those in search of the freshest raw fish restaurants.
At Daepohang Port, it is said that the Seorak Mountains and the East Sea are gifts from nature. The port is filled with raw fish restaurants and a live fish market containing eel, flatfish, flounder, yellowtail, and a plethora of other high-end seafood. Furthermore, the abundance of local dishes that can be found lining the streets includes ojingeo sundae and Gamja Songpyeon. For raw fish lovers that are in the Sokcho area, Daepohang Port is the place to be.
Even though, we were not hungry, but the stalls consist of variety fried snacks tempted us. Jenny told us that she would treat us there. Actually, it like gorengan in Indonesia, but maybe looked more like tempura style one. The interesting one is big squid, and they filled the inside with the rice as you can see in the picture. It was called ojingo sundae, their local dishes. Usually sundae, according to Wikipedia, is a Korean dish made generally by boiling or steaming cow or pig's intestines that are stuffed with various ingredients. It is a kind of blood sausage and believed to have been eaten for a long time. The recipes related to sundae can be found in Joseon cookbooks published in 19th century such as "Gyuhap chongseo" and "Siuijeonseo". Sundae can be made with seafood such as ojing-eo sundae (오징어 순대 squid sundae) and myeongtae sundae (명태 순대 Alaska pollock sundae). Since we're Muslim, we're not allowed to eat pig or blood so squid is Ok.
This area is developed as tourism area so you can see in the picture the construction is on progress. Well, I would love to see what they will become two or three years later.
