Bangkok (Culinary) Trip in July 2012: Dinner at Food Village Suvarnabhumi International Airport

Before we went back to Indonesia, we still have around THB 500 to spend it the airport. As we still haven't got our dinner, and since the food itself might be expensive when we already inside the airport building after check-in, we decided to eat first.
There are around 8-10 vendors outside that sells food, but most of them are fully packed, even the Starbucks. So after long consideration (twice we move back and forth to scout the restaurants) we decided to eat in the Food Village.

The option is either the sticky rice and sliced mango and selection of fruits (which looked not very appealing), and boxed rice with chicken or pork. As we don't eat pork, then the option goes to the shredded fried chicken and rice.
Although the taste is quite average, one thing stands out is the price. With only around THB 55 (US$ 1,7) per box or THB 70 (US$ 2,1) with drink like in the picture, this could be the cheapest meal we ever have in Bangkok.

At least we went home to Indonesia not with an empty stomach :).

Mexican Food in Bangkok?
Sounds wrong eh? But it turned out well here.
Sunrise Tacos turned out to be one of the vendor found in Bangkok that serves super great food :).
It's kinda hard to find great Mexican Food in Indonesia. So, when we got the chance to have it in Thailand, we don't hesitate to give it a go!
The first thing we should order is their nachos. Here for only THB 59 (US$ 1,8) you can get one dipping sauce with bottomless chips. Yes, you got it right: B.O.T.T.O.M.L.E.S.S. So, as other proud students do, we feel to have the obligation to order this food :D. We choose the medium spicy dip-John's Hot Salsa (which turned to be as spicy as hell. I don't want to think what happened if we ordered the spicy dip) and the Lalo's hot and sweet dip (adjustable nicely for me). The other menu that we ordered including their signature chicken wings with blue cheese dip-very delicious (THB 120 ~ US$ 3,6), Taco Rice and Cheese (THB 155 ~ US$ 5) and for the drinks Mineral water, and for me: Coconut Rice Milk. The coconut rice milk at first are considered to be a bad choice, but it turned out when we try it, it tasted super delicious! Yummy!

Definitely become one of our new favorite places to go when we visit Bangkok in the future.

Bangkok (Culinary) Trip in July 2012: Cocoichibanya at Siam Paragon

Closing to our sixth place to eat in a day, we decided to go and visit the Siam Paragon, while detouring a little bit to the Madame Tussaud Museum first (too bad it was already closed). The clock is already reaching around 08.30 pm, and with most of the shops here in Bangkok closed around 10.00 pm, we need to hurry if we want to have dinner.

We looked around inside the 1st floor of Siam Paragon mall, carefully scanning which restaurant to choose. After a while, we decided to go to this vendor: Cocoichibanya. It is actually a Japanese curry house branch, and it was always packed with customers there.

When we got there, we also have to wait in line before we can be seated and order any menu. Their specialty obviously is their curry. We ordered the Lightly Crisped Chicken Curry (THB 150) and the Creamed Mushroom Omelette Curry (THB 170), with package ordering (adding around THB 35) we can have side dish of salad and drinks.

They set up a spiciness level for each of their curry (expect to their omelette curry) from no spice, to the hot and spicy. They also serves salad which tasted kinda funny for our palate. Must be the Japanese Mayo inside the salad which makes the salad tasted funny (in a delicious way).

Overall their taste was very great, and we are looking forward to have their chain opened up in Indonesia soon.

Bangkok (Culinary) Trip in July 2012: Maevaree Fruit Shop, Thong Lo

Sticky rice and sliced mango are always considered to be one of the traditional dessert that can be found in Thailand. Everywhere you go, you can always find a stall selling this traditional food, with price ranging from the cheapest to the expensive (like the one you found in the airport, costing you around THB 150 ~ US$ 4,5).

But according to one trusted website that Alia was scouting before we go to Bangkok, the only place which sells the best sticky rice and sliced mango in Bangkok can only be found in Thong Lo area.
The shop called Maevaree Fruit Shop, and it is located just nearby the exit of Thong Lo BTS (Bangkok Train Service) hub. This shop looked promising as we see people goes in and out carrying variety of fruits from the store.

We purchase the sticky rice and sliced mango which cost us THB 100 (US$ 3,0). The sticky rice should be eaten with coconut milk sauce and crispy corn (?) topping. The mango itself is quite different with the one we used to find in Indonesia. They are more floury (is this even a word?) and more solid, but they are sweet. Combined with the sticky rice, we can say that this is one of the best dessert that we've ever tasted in Bangkok :).

Bangkok (Culinary) Trip in July 2012: Bangkok Burger Company, Opus Building Thong Lor 10

One of the place you should visited if you are happened to go to Bangkok. Branded to be one of the best places to eat in 2012 by TripAdvisor, this place is really lived up to it's fame.
The place itself is quite hard to find. We've managed to walk the entire Thong Lo road before we decided to give them a call (we almost giving up, and was considering to go to Crepes & Co.). It turned out the road naming system in Bangkok is quite confusing, and we read the address backwards.
The place is located inside a Soi (small road in Thailand) called Thong Lo 10, inside a building (perhaps another community mall) called the Opus Building. The building itself was still under construction with proposed new restaurant including a bar in the highest level of the building.
As this is our fifth place to eat in a day, we decided to order just one burger and a beverage (also because the price is quite premium, you can easily spend around THB 500 ~ US$ 15 for large burger and a drink).
It turned out that it was a wise choice (we learned from our previous mistakes :D), as the portion is quite huge and it complimented with additional fries and coleslaw.

After that meal, perhaps we need to walk along the Thong Lo road again, just to burn to calories :).

Bangkok (Culinary) Trip in July 2012: iBerry, J Avenue Thong Lor

Welcome to iBerry!


During our trip to find Bangkok Burger Company, we stumbled upon this community mall called "J Avenue", and there besides Greyhound Cafe and Starbucks, it turned out they also have iBerry.
iBerry is essentially an Ice Cream chain operated in Thailand. It is well known to have different design in each of their chain. It is also well known for their variety of taste, affordable price, and sometimes considered to be the best Ice Cream vendor in Thailand.

We could not argue more. It is one of the best Ice Cream we tasted in Bangkok :). With only around THB 60 (US$ 1,8) you can get two small scoop of Ice Cream which for us enough for two.

Bangkok (Culinary) Trip in July 2012: Chu Chocolate Bar & Cafe, Exchange Tower

This is another gem that are worth mentioning and looking when you are going to Bangkok. Located inside an office building, just across the new Terminal 21 shopping mall, the place serves premium chocolate and desserts.
The place itself situated in the second floor of the building with the view to the bustling life of Bangkok people and it's heavy traffic. And we imagine it will be more romantic if you managed to be inside the building during rainy day. Hmmm...
We are here only for the two main favorite items: Their Iced Chocolate and their Churros. You can ordered the chocolate according to their pureness, from the mild 14% to the heavy duty 70% pureness level, but their favorite is their 58% dark chocolate. We don't know where they got this magic number, but for us that number produces the best chocolate drink that we ever have :). Their churros are also delicious, as it serves fresh and with chocolate dipping sauce, you can never go wrong :).
Well, their breakfast salad and egg benedict also the recommended dish, maybe we'll be order that next time we're in the city.
