South Korea (Culinary) Trip in November 2012: Grilled Fish for Dinner in Sokcho

From Nami Island, we were heading to Sokcho.  It is a city located in the far northeast of Gangwon-do province, South Korea. According to Wikipedia, the city belonged to North Korea from 1945 until the end of the Korean War. Sokcho receives a number of tourists attracted by the closeness to the DMZ. The city is also a well-known gateway to nearbySeoraksan national park.

We arrived at 8 pm, and before we went to our hotel, we had our dinner. This city is famous for their fish product, that's why for dinner we were served grilled fish with tofu soup and just like usual, there also various of side dish. The fish surprisingly good. The taste actually like tuna but not too salty. According to our tour leader, Jenny, this type of fish only live in the sea of subtropics region. She mentioned the name, but I couldn't remember. The restaurant actually very modest. It remind me ordinary rumah makan in Indonesia. The place itself not too big, even when we came, it quite hectic inside. We had to sit on the floor, and it was interesting. I think the restaurant usually had foreign visitor because they displayed collection of many from various countries on the wall.

South Korea (Culinary) Trip in November 2012: Namisum Chicken Barbeque

Second venue that we visited on our tour was Nami Island or known as Namihara Republic. This place was famous as a shooting location for one of most memorable Korean Drama, Winter Sonata starred by Bae Young Jun and Choi Ji Wo.

For our lunch, the tour guide took as to the restaurant in Nami Island called Sum Hyang-gi. Actually, at first we didn't aware about the name of the place cause it was written in Hangul, but after done some research we found it. The restaurant is famous for its chicken barbecue and as the website said that their unique menu features fresh vegetables a la Nami with barbecue.

The chicken barbecue was delicious, or maybe we're quite hungry, and it even more good when we wrapped the chicken with the lettuce, rice, and side dishes. How exciting for me to try food that I always saw when watching Arirang or Kimchi Chronicle.

South Korea (Culinary) Trip in November 2012: Udon near Incheon Airport

Just like I said in the earlier post, even though we already had breakfast in the plane, I was still a little bit hungry. Well, who couldn't resist some udon with clear broth, which was perfect for such cold weather. The noodle was tasted fantastic, even though for some Indonesian it was kind bland. But Aswin and I like it, the broth tasted good, and it certainly conclude that morning.

Well, I search the name of the place in the internet, but I found nothing. But, I think this place is  for tourist because later before we went back to Indonesia on the way to the airport we stopped at this place again and at the other part of the building there also souvenir shop.

South Korea (Culinary) Trip in November 2012: Breakfast in between Indonesia and Korea's Sky

First of all, yeah, I'm such a procrastinator. I've been wanting to write about our (culinary) trip to South Korea in November, but I was too lazy to write and I've been stressing out with theses and everything. So, in the next few blog posts you'll find our food journey in Korea, but keep in mind that it wasn't us who picked up all those eating place. We were simply just go with the flow, well, I mean the travel did the job.

We had breakfast in the plane around 6 am Korean time, actually I couldn't sleep because I had some kind of allergies if spent too much time in the room with air conditioner. I was also terribly hungry, I could eat a cow! So, mainly the food wasn't terrible at all, but they have surprisingly small portion and after I had eaten all of the breakfast set they gave us, I was still little hungry. Hopefully after, we arrived, we had the chance to have another breakfast.
